Bretton Woods

Overview

Currently the largest ski resort in New Hampshire, Bretton Woods is about a 3 ¼ hour drive from Montreal, with majority of the drive via autoroute to Magog and then South to the U.S. border where you will continue on Interstates 91 and 93 into New Hampshire. The mountain is located just a few minutes past the village of Twin Mountain on Route 302. At Bretton Woods you will find 62 trails with 35 glades for your enjoyment served by 10 lifts, 4 High Speed Quad Chairlifts, 1 fixed grip Quad in the Learning Zone along with 2 Wonder Carpets, 1 Triple Chair, 1 Double Chair, and the Stickney Glade T-Bar. Snowmaking covers 92% of the available terrain on a 1500 foot vertical. 5 trails and 2 lifts are open for night skiing on most Fridays, Saturdays, and Holiday Period during the season. There is also a variety of other winter activities here such as Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, dog sledding, skating just to name a few. There is lodging on site at the Bretton Arms Inn, the Lodge, the Town Homes at Bretton Woods, or at the luxurious Mount Washington Hotel a few minutes away.

The Mountain and the Ski Trails

There is a large variety of trails for the beginner right up to the most expert skier. Bretton Woods consists of 3 summits; Rosebrook, Stickney, and West Mountain. Most of the easier and intermediate trails are in the Rosebrook area, where the more challenging glades are found on the West Mountain area, and some on Rosebrook. The Learning Zone is in a separate area just to the left of the chalet where there is a fixed grip Quad chair and 2 wonder carpets. A nice easy area away from the fast-paced skier. There are some intermediate level glades on the Mount Stickney area served by the Telegraph T-bar. There are some nice easy cruisers like The Ben trails just off from the Bethlehem Quad chair. The Ben trails are Bigger Ben, at the top of the lift, Big Ben which is the middle section, and Ben to take you back to the bottom. Rangeview is another nice cruiser that is under the Zephyr Quad chair. Fabyan's Express, Crawford's Blaze, No Regrets, Oscar Barron's, and the Panorama/2 Miles home trails are some of the nice intermediate runs, and for the experts you have the Waumbek, Bode's Run, the Zealand and the Snake. In the chalet, you have the ski rentals and repair shop, on the lower level. On the main floor is the Customer Service desk, boutique, and the Lucy Crawford's Food court to grab a quick bite to eat. There is plenty of seating to find a place to take a break. At the mountain, there is also the Latitude 44 Restaurant found just off the top of the Bethlehem Quad chair, and the Slopeside Restaurant and Pub as other options. For later dining, there is the Mount Washington hotel and the Bretton Arms Inn.

Unique Features

The views at Bretton Woods are just breathtaking from just about anywhere on the mountain. On a clear day, you can see the Mount Washington Observatory at the summit of the mountain. In the valley below is the view of the luxurious Mount Washington hotel. There are many activities here other than just skiing. The area is a 4-season resort with many options for the family to enjoy. Across the highway from the mountain is Fabyan's Railway Station, that is the end of the line for the Conway Scenic Railroad that runs from North Conway through the Crawford Notch in the summer months. Nearby is the Mount Washington Cog Railway that will take you from the valley to the summit of Mount Washington on an old-style cog railway system. At the summit of the Zephyr Quad is Chutters on the Mountain, a candy shop should you have a craving for some sweets while skiing.
